What SubWhispr does

SubWhispr is a Chrome extension that detects videos on web pages and generates translated subtitles. It works by intercepting video stream URLs on the pages you visit, sending the audio for transcription, and returning translated subtitle files.

Data we collect

We collect the minimum data necessary to provide the service:

  • Video stream URLs — Used to download and process the audio for transcription. We do not store these URLs after processing is complete.
  • Page metadata — Page title and domain name, used only to help you identify which video you're translating. Not stored on our servers.
  • Generated subtitles — The transcription and translation output. Stored temporarily for you to download, then automatically deleted.

Data we do NOT collect

  • No personal information (name, email, address)
  • No browsing history
  • No cookies or tracking data
  • No video content — we only process audio for transcription
  • No analytics or usage tracking

Third-party services

To generate subtitles, we use third-party AI services for audio transcription and text translation. Audio data is sent to these services solely for processing and is not retained by them beyond what is necessary to complete the request. We do not share any other data with third parties.

Data storage

All extension data (job history, preferences) is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage API. This data never leaves your device unless you initiate a subtitle generation request.

Permissions explained

  • "Access to all websites" — Required to detect video streams on any website you visit. The extension only activates when it detects video content and does not read or modify any other page content.
  • "Storage" — Used to save your preferences and job history locally in your browser.

Your rights

Since we don't collect personal data or create user accounts, there is no personal data to request, modify, or delete. Your local extension data can be cleared at any time by removing the extension.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date.
